The Seagull by Anton Chekhov Plot Summary

The Seagull by Anton Chekhov is a slice-of-life drama set in the Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century. The cast of characters is dissatisfied with their lives. Some desire love. Some desire success. Some desire artistic genius. No one, however, ever seems to attain happiness. Scholars have often said that Chekhov’s plays are not plot driven. Instead, the plays are character studies designed to create a specific mood. Some critics view The Seagull as a tragic play about eternally unhappy people. Others see it as a humorous albeit bitter satire, poking fun at human folly. Synopsis of The Seagull: Act One The Setting: A rural estate surrounded by the tranquil countryside. Act One takes place outdoors, next to a beautiful lake. The estate is owned by Peter Nikolaevich Sorin, a retired civil servant of the Russian Army. The estate is managed by a stubborn, ornery man named Shamrayev. The play begins with Masha, the estate manager’s daughter, strolling along with an impoverished school teacher named Seymon Medvedenko. The opening lines set the tone for the entire play: Medvedenko: Why is it you always wear black? Masha: I’m in mourning for my life. I’m unhappy. Medvedenko loves her. However, Masha cannot return his affection. She loves Sorin’s nephew, the brooding playwright Konstantin Treplyov. Konstantin is oblivious to Masha because he is madly in love with his beautiful neighbor Nina. The young and lively Nina arrives, ready to perform in Konstantin’s strange, new play. She talks about the beautiful surroundings. She says she feels like a seagull. They kiss, but when he professes his love for her, she does not return his adoration. (Have you picked up on the theme of unrequited love?) Konstantin’s mother, Irina Arkadina, is a famous actress. She is the primary source of Konstantin’s misery. He does not like living in the shadow of his popular and superficial mother. To add to his disdain, he is jealous of Irina’s successful boyfriend, a famed novelist named Boris Trigorin. Irina represents a typical diva, made popular in traditional 1800s theater. Konstantin wants to create dramatic works that break away from tradition. He wants to create new forms. He despises the old-fashioned forms of Trigorin and Irina. Irina, Trigorin, and their friends arrive to watch the play. Nina begins performing a very surrealistic monologue: Nina: The bodies of all living creatures have disappeared into dust, and eternal matter has changed them into stones, into water, into clouds, while the souls have all united into one. That one soul of the world is I. Irina rudely interrupts several times until her son stops the performance altogether. He leaves in an indignant fury. Afterward, Nina mingles with Irina and Trigorin. She is enamored by their fame, and her flattery quickly infatuates Trigorin. Nina leaves for home; her parents do not approve of her associating with artists and bohemians. The rest go inside, with the exception of Irina’s friend, Dr. Dorn. He reflects upon the positive qualities of her son’s play. Konstantin returns and the doctor praises the drama, encouraging the young man to continue writing. Konstantin appreciates the compliments but desperately wants to see Nina again. He runs off into the darkness. Masha confides in Dr. Dorn, confessing her love for Konstantin. Dr. Dorn consoles her. Dorn: How troubled everyone is, how worried and anxious! And so much love†¦ Oh, you bewitching lake. (Gently.) But what can I do, my dear child? What? What? Act Two The Setting: A few days have passed since Act One. In between the two acts,  Konstatin  has become more depressed and erratic. He is upset by his artistic failure and Nina’s rejection. Most of Act Two takes place on the croquet lawn. Masha, Irina, Sorin, and Dr. Dorn are chatting with one another. Nina joins them, still ecstatic about being in the presence of a famous actress. Sorin complains about his health and how he never experienced a fulfilling life. Dr. Dorn offers no relief. He merely suggests sleeping pills. (He doesn’t have the best bedside manner.) Wandering by herself, Nina marvels at how strange it is to observe famous people enjoying everyday activities. Konstantin emerges from the woods. He has just shot and killed a seagull. He places the dead bird at Nina’s feet and then claims that soon he will kill himself. Nina can no longer relate to him. He speaks only in incomprehensible symbols. Konstantin believes that she does not love him because of his ill-received play. He sulks away as Trigorin enters. Nina admires Trigorin. â€Å"Your life is beautiful,† she says. Trigorin indulges himself by  discussing his not-so-satisfying but all-consuming life as a writer.  Nina expresses her desire to be famous: Nina: For the sake of happiness like that, being a writer or an actress, I would endure poverty, disillusionment, and the hatred of those close to me. I’d live in an attic and eat nothing but rye bread. I’d suffer dissatisfaction with myself in realizing my own fame. Irina interrupts their conversation to announce that they are extending their stay. Nina is delighted. Act Three The Setting: The dining room at Sorin’s house. A week has passed since Act Two. During that time, Konstantin has attempted suicide. His gunshot left him with a mild head wound and a distraught mother. He has now resolved to challenge Trigorin to a duel. (Notice how many of the intense events take place off stage or in between scenes. Chekhov was famous for indirect action.) The third act of Anton Chekhov’s  The Seagull  begins with Masha announcing her decision to marry the poor school teacher in order to stop loving Konstantin. Sorin worries about Konstantin. Irina refuses to give her son any money in order to travel abroad. She claims that she spends too much on her theater costumes. Sorin begins feeling faint. Konstantin, head bandaged from his self-inflicted wound, enters and revives his uncle. Sorin’s fainting spells have become common. He asks his mother to show generosity and loan Sorin money so that he could move into town. She replies, â€Å"I don’t have money. I’m an actress, not a banker.† Irina changes his bandages. This is an unusually tender moment between mother and son. For the first time in the play, Konstantin speaks lovingly to his mother, fondly remembering their past experiences. However, when the subject of Trigorin enters the conversation, they begin to fight again. At his mother’s urging, he agrees to call off the duel. He leaves as Trigorin enters. The famous novelist is enraptured by Nina, and Irina knows it. Trigorin wants Irina to set him free from their relationship so that he can pursue Nina and experience â€Å"the love of a young girl, charming, poetic, carrying me off into the realm of dreams.† Irina  is hurt and insulted by Trigorin’s declaration. She begs him not to leave. She is so desperately pathetic that he agrees to maintain their passionless relationship. However, as they prepare to leave the estate, Nina discreetly informs Trigorin that she is running away to Moscow to become an actress. Trigorin gives her the name of his hotel. Act Three ends as Trigorin and Nina share a prolonged kiss. Act Four The Setting: Two years pass. Act Four takes place in one of Sorin’s rooms. Konstantin has changed it into a writer’s study. The audience learns through exposition that during the last two years, Nina and Trigorin’s love affair has soured. She became pregnant, but the child died. Trigorin lost interest in her. She also became an actress, but not a very successful one. Konstantin has been depressed most of the time, but he has gained some success as a short story writer. Masha and her husband prepare the room for guests. Irina will be arriving for a visit. She has been summoned because her brother Sorin has not been feeling well. Medvendenko is anxious to return home and attend to their baby. However, Masha wants to stay. She is bored with her husband and family life. She still longs for Konstantin. She hopes to move away, believing that distance will diminish her heartache. Sorin, frailer than ever, laments the many things he wanted to achieve, yet he has not fulfilled a single dream. Dr. Dorn asks Konstantin about Nina. Konstantin explains her situation. Nina has written him a few times, signing her name as â€Å"The Seagull.† Medvedenko mentions having seen her in town recently. Trigorin and Irina return from the train station. Trigorin carries a copy of Konstantin’s published work. Apparently, Konstantin has many admirers in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Konstantin is no longer hostile to Trigorin, but he is not comfortable either. He leaves while Irina and the others play a Bingo-style parlor game. Shamrayev tells Trigorin that the seagull that Konstantin shot long ago has been stuffed and mounted, just as Trigorin wished. However, the novelist has no recollection of making such a request. Konstantin returns to work on his writing. The others leave to dine in the next room. Nina enters through the garden. Konstantin is surprised and happy to see her. Nina has changed much. She has become thinner; her eyes seem wild. She deliriously reflects about becoming an actress. And yet she claims, â€Å"Life is shabby.† Konstantin once again declares his undying love for her, despite how enraged she has made him in the past. Still, she does not return his affection. She calls herself ‘the seagull† and believes she â€Å"deserves to be killed.† She claims that she still loves Trigorin more than ever. Then she remembers how young and innocent she and Konstantin once were. She repeats part of the  monologue  from his play. Then, she suddenly embraces him and runs away, exiting through the garden. Konstantin pauses a moment. Then, for two full minutes he tears up all his manuscripts. He exits into another room. Irina, Dr. Dorn, Trigorin and others re-enter the study to continue socializing. A  gunshot  is heard in the next room, startling everyone. Dr. Dorn says it is probably nothing. He peeks through the  door but tells Irina it was merely a burst bottle from his medicine case. Irina is greatly relieved. However, Dr. Dorn takes Trigorin aside and delivers the final lines of the play: Take Irina Nikolaevna somewhere, away from here. The fact is, Konstantin Gavrilovich has shot himself. Study Questions What is Chekhov saying about Love? Fame? Regret? Why do so many of the characters desire those they cannot have? What is the effect of having much of the play’s action to place off stage? Why do you suppose Chekhov ended the play before the audience is able to witness Irina discovering her son’s death? What does the dead seagull symbolize?

Boko Haram Islamics are responsible for the deaths of 10 christians. These islamic terrorists hate all the western christian. The majority of the kidnapped girls are christian. Violence back then has left a major impact on the kidnapping of 200-300 nigerian girls now. The Isamic people have always tried to find a way to take down the christians. Now, the Boko Haram terrorists still continue to take action in violence. It is said that Boko Haram has converted the girls into Islams and has them married off. The Boko Haram Leader, Abubakar has denied the hope of releasing the girls. People claim that the government has done nothing to help them. Neo Classicism free essay sample

England had merged with Scotland and Wales, in order to constitute he United Kingdom of Great Britain. On the other side of the Atlantic, the colonies were now known as The United States. This former colonial territory Was a Mecca to European people, especially Germans. These hard-working immigrants would help to create new industries, based on the latest agricultural achievements. All those enthusiastic new Americans were helping grease the wheels of progress in regard to world history. But, as the new American residents worked hard, they also loved freedom the love of freedom that the Puritans had brought with them, at the nations earliest beginnings. Soon brilliant, thinking men who would speak about democracy, economy and other vital ideologies would appear. These new ideologies would be swiftly and strongly embraced by North Americans and would kick-start its destiny of changing the world. If we are to speak about poetry during this period, then we must start with Alexander Pope (1688-1744). He was, along with several contemporaries who followed the French poet and theorist, Nicholas Boiled, (1636-1711), who, in turn, was a fervent follower of the Roman poet Horace (Quintus Hortatory Flacks, 65-8 B. C. ), author of Ears Poetic. ND other classical Latin and Greek poets. Boiled was the author of the book Art Boutique, which became the manual of the poets who founded the Neo-Classical era which was noted for the imitation of classical aesthetics in poetry. Pope was considered a prodigy, because he wrote quality verse at only twenty years of age.One of his more celebrated poem was The Duncan (begun in 1728 and completed in 1741), a satire aimed at his detractors and the dullness of some pieces of art in those days. This poem uses the heroic couplet. The heroic couplet comes from Horace and was used first in England y John Donned, Andrew Marvel and John Milton. It is considered to have been perfected bygone Dryden (1631-1700), poet laureate. The neoclassical age The period is called neoclassical because its writers looked back to the ideals and art forms of classical times, emphasizing even more than their Renaissance predecessors the classical ideals of order and rational control. Such simply constructed but perfect works as the Parthenon and Sophocles Antigen, such achievements as the peace and order established by the Roman Empire (and celebrated in Book VI of Vergers Manned), suggest what classical writers saw in the classical world. Their respect for the past led them to be conservative both in art and politics. Always aware of the conventions appropriate to each genre, they modeled their works on classical masterpieces and heeded the rules thought to be laid down by classical critics. In political and social affairs, too, they were guided by the wisdom of the past: traditional institutions had, at least, survived the test of time. No more than their medieval and Renaissance predecessors did neoclassical thinkers share our modern assumption that change means progress, since hey believed that human nature is imperfect, human achievements are necessarily limited, and therefore human aims should be sensibly limited as well. It was better to set a moderate goal , whether in art or society, and achieve it well, than to strive for an infinite ideal and fail.Reasonable Philippe in The Misanthrope does not get angry at peoples injustice, because he accepts human nature as imperfect. Neoclassical thinkers could use the past as a guide for the present because they assumed that human nature was constantessentially the same regardless of time and place. Art, they believed, should express this essential tauter: Nothing can please many, and please long, but just representations of general nature (Samuel Johnson). An individual character was valuable for what he or she revealed of universal human nature.Of course, all great art has this sort of sign objectifications made his statement about Shakespeare. But neoclassical artists more consciously emphasized common human characteristics over individual differences, as we see in the type-named characters of Moldier. If human nature has remained constant over the centuries, it is unlikely that any startling new discoveries will be made. Hence classical artists did not strive to be original so much as to express old truths in a newly effective way. As Alexander pope, one of their greatest poets, wrote: True wit is nature to advantage dressed, / What oft was thought, but newer so well expressed. Neoclassical writers aimed to articulate general truth rather than unique vision, to communicate to others more than to express themselves. Social Themes Neoclassical writers saw themselves, as well as their readers and characters, above all as members of society. Social institutions might be foolish or corruptindeed, given the intrinsic limitations Of human nature, they robbery werebut the individual who rebelled against custom or asserted his superiority to humankind was, like Allocates in The Misanthrope, presented as presumptuous and absurd. While Renaissance writers were sometimes fascinated by rebels, and later Romantic artists often glorified them, neoclassical artists expected people to conform to established social norms. For individual opinion was far less likely to be true than was the consensus of society, developed over time and embodied in custom and tradition. As the rules for proper writing should be followed, so should the rules for civilized induct in society. Neither Moldier nor Jane Austin advocate blind following of convention, yet both insist that good manners are important as a manifestation of self-control and consideration for others. Www. Academic. Brooklyn. CUNY. Deed/English/anemia/CSS/monocle. HTML) In brief, the neoclassical age came about as part of the 1 8th century, and it was considered to be an enlightenment movement. In this age, man was considered to have been related to the world, and he also had a social contract with life, where a poets mind was rarely a subject at all. Here I have UT together some descriptions that I have understood the neoclassical age to consist of: Structure, order, miles, symmetry, constraints, common sense, harmony, ideal beauty, and it is also very universal.

The Importance of Transitional Words and Phrases

The Importance of Transitional Words and Phrases THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSITIONAL WORDS AND PHRASES When it comes to writing academic papers, communication is pivotal. For a reader to navigate successfully through an essay, therefore following and understanding each point, thought by thought, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, the writer must always employ certain words, phrases, and tools, because it is their responsibility to have the reader know exactly what they are attempting to convey. This includes linking words and phrases (like on the contrary, however, as a result, in comparison, this suggests that, including, most importantly and although) that bridge together certain items in a sentence or paragraph. Since most academic essays include some kind of a thesis that is evidenced by supporting points, the individual paragraphs (the body) of an essay generally expand on each point, one at a time, to provide a solid argument – one that is believable, convincing. Linking words and phrases are to be generally used in a single paragraph to connect sentences and thoughts that validate a single point that is being examined in an essay. These types of words and phrases are generally used for when a writer needs to expand on just ONE point, one idea on which they are elaborating. For example, in one of their points claiming that poetry is dying out in the 21st century, the writer may focus on the low number of poetry books sold in 2013. Expanding on this point, they may compare (and use phrases like in comparison) that number with the number of fiction or nonfiction books sold in 2013 to demonstrate (this suggests that) their point that people just aren’t reading and buying poetry anymore. You may also be interested in: Connecting Words and Phrases Social Media Words and Phrases in the Academic World How to Write a Great Essay Then there are transitional words and phrases to indicate to a reader a change in a point, topic, or subject in the essay they are reading. They are usually found in the first sentence of a paragraph examining a new point in the argument. They strengthen what a written assignment seeks to convey, explain, or argue to the reader – who most times is the student-writer’s professor. Also, transitional words and phrases help the reader make connections between evidencing points in the essay, by the use of, sometimes, just one word. Just like keywords in conversation, the purpose of these particular words is to communicate effectively and illustrate a transition in thought: Firstly, first of all, secondly, thirdly, next, subsequently, lastly, conclusively, in conclusion, and finally. Without these cues, the reader is ultimately left confused, because the reader is ineffectively not kept abreast of the argument being made, which then weakens the essay’s overall purpose to convince or educate, depending on the type of essay. Lacking these cues, unfortunately, results in the student-writer getting a low grade on their written assignment. Most persuasive essays, or even five-paragraph essays, are supported by extensive, well-thought-out evidence. The evidence is traditionally explained in the body paragraphs of an essay, which, again, are mostly made up of at least three defending, or defining, points, each one making up at least a paragraph, and usually more, of that essay. But when an essay does not indicate when a new point is being put forth or examined, to further validate the overarching theme of the essay – which is its thesis – the reader fails to recognize the change and instead is left considering the previous point and not the current one. And the writer’s argument is ultimately weakened. If you would like to avoid a weak argument and a low grade, let professional writers help with proofreading, making sure your paper contains connection and transitional words and phrases, ensure it contains no spelling and grammar errors and is structured properly. Ericsson encourages individuals need to stand for something or fall for anything. Ericsson explains that this form of lying combines other forms of lying such as ignoring facts omissions denial and selective memory (Ericsson, 2005). The essay salvation introduces us to a 13-year-old boy. The Christian description of salvation as presented by the boys’ aunt gives the boy the idea of what to expect in his salvation process (Hughes, 2003). The boy believes in this definition that he struggles in his process of finding salvation. The boy does not get the chance to find his own meaning of salvation he sticks to the definition, and experience presented by other people (Hughes, 2003). He lies about being saved to make his aunt and happy, but he is haunted deeply by this act. Lying does have consequences many times we lie and feel guilty. Marketing Plan for SBA in developing sounds for mobile games Assignment - 1

Marketing Plan for SBA in developing sounds for mobile games applications - Assignment Example The marketing options to support the diversification strategy are examined in some detail and particular attention is focussed on a promotional and communications strategy designed to build profile and relationships with key market players. These strategies include direct marketing, business-to-business advertising and media relations. SBA now wants to protect itself from the impact of a possible downturn in its core business by diversifying into a new market. It has identified the potentially lucrative mobile games market as a possible opportunity whereby it could create and market music/sound for application in such games. The purpose of this marketing plan is to assist the management committee in reaching a business decision on possible diversification by presenting a detailed and factual analysis of the market situation and by recommending strategies for exploiting any identified market opportunities. Whilst there is a wealth of information and market data on the mobile gaming industry per se there is a dearth of information and market data on the ‘sub market’ of music/ sound supply to this industry. Consequently it will be necessary for the management committee to authorise some primary research in this area to ensure that business decisions are taken on the basis of authenticated data. A mobile game is a video game played on a mobile device such as a mobile Phone or handheld computer. This does not include games played on Handheld video game systems such as PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS are not classified as mobile gaming devices in the context of this plan. (Wikipedia, 2009) The mobile gaming market is growing steadily. The number of worldwide gamers has increased from about 55 million in 2005 to about 183 million in 2008. Global revenue from mobile gaming in 2008 was $6.9bn and is expected to grow to $18 billion by 2014 (Roberts, B. 2009). â€Å"Given

Creative essay :: essays research papers

Year 12 Essay Creative It was a typical Friday night job, thirteen young teenagers wanting to head out to the city. I received a page to my taxi referring me to an address 127 Croft Rise Eltham, I quickly checked up the address and before I knew it I was in front of the house with thirteen guys giving me directions to where they wanted me to take them in the city. Luckily the city was quiet compared to most Friday nights in Melbourne. The guys directed me to chapel St South Yarra to a club called Chasers. I dropped the guys off doing the stock no meter on and pocketing the cash for myself which was around 30 dollars. Before I knew it I had to come back to the eastern suburbs, on Doncaster road and that’s where I came across a red BMW M3 convertible with 21inch chrome rims on it, this caught my attention and the next thing I saw was a bicycle in my windscreen shattering with the airbag puffing into my face my body Rowling around in the car whilst another body went through my windscreen landing in the back seat unconscious. The nurse walked in, I could barely hear her say my name. I saw my family readily available standing around me all with black eyes knowing that they have been waiting for me to wake up only to give me the worst news of my life. The doctor and the nurse and my whole family standing in one room watching me as they tell me that I was hit by a taxi two days ago and I have been paralysed from my hip down. From my distort anger I didn’t want myself to believe this had happened. The first month moved on and went into court to face the negligent reckless taxi driver. There was a great tension in the two groups and as he went up to face the judge he was also brought up for not turning the meter on in the taxi and that he stole money from the cab. He was done for one count for negligence and one count of reckless driving and was put away for a minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 20 with no bail. As the taxi driver was taken away he said it was a beautiful BMW which I didn’t understand where that was coming from.

Stefan’s Diaries: Origins Chapter 21

The next morning, Damon left with the brief explanation that he was helping the militia at the camp. I wasn't sure I believed his excuse, but the house was decidedly more peaceful in his absence. Katherine came over each night to play cribbage with Father. Occasionally I'd join her as a two-against-one team. While playing, Katherine would tell Father stories from her past: about her father's shipping business; about her Italian mother; about Wheat, the Scottish terrier she'd had as a girl. I wondered if any of them were true, or if it was Katherine's plan to act as a modern- day Scheherazade, spinning stories that would eventually persuade Father to spare her. Katherine would always make a show of going back to the carriage house, and it was agony waiting for the moment when Father went to bed so that I could follow her. She never talked about her past–or her plans–with me. She didn't tell me how she got her nourishment, and I didn't ask. I didn't want to know. It was far easier to pretend she was just a normal girl. One afternoon, when Father was in town with Robert, discussing business with the Cartwrights, Katherine and I decided to spend an entire day together, instead of a few stolen, dark hours. It was nearing October, but no one would know it from the high temperatures and the daily late- afternoon thunderstorms. I hadn't gone swimming all summer, and I couldn't wait to feel the water of the pond on my skin–and Katherine in my arms in the daylight. I stripped down and jumped in immediately. â€Å"Don't splash!† yelled Katherine. She lifted her simple blue skirt up to her ankles and cautiously stepped toward the edge of the pond. She'd already left her muslin flats beneath the willow tree, and I couldn't stop staring at the delicate white of her ankles. â€Å"Come in! The water's fine!† I yelled, even though my teeth were chattering. Katherine continued to tiptoe toward the edge of the pond until she was standing on the muddy strip between the grass and the water. â€Å"It's dirty.† She wrinkled her nose, shielding her eyes from the sun. â€Å"That's why you have to get in. To wash off all the mud,† I said, using my fingers to flick water toward Katherine. A few droplets landed on the bodice of her dress, and I felt desire course through me. I dunked under the water to cool my head. â€Å"You're not afraid of a little splashing,† I said as I emerged, my hair dripping on my shoulders. â€Å"Or, shall I say, you're not afraid of splashing Stefan?† I felt a little bit ridiculous saying it, because such comments didn't sound nearly as clever on my lips. Still, she did me the favor of laughing. I carefully sidestepped the rocks on the bottom of the pond to walk closer toward her, then flicked more water in her direction. â€Å"No!† Katherine shrieked, but she made no move to run away as I walked out of the pond, grabbed her around the waist, and carried her into the water. â€Å"Stefan! Stop!† she screamed as she clung to my neck. â€Å"At least let me take off my dress!† At that, I immediately let her go. She lifted her hands over her head, allowing me to easily pull off her dress. There she stood in her little white slip. I gaped in amazement. Of course I'd seen her body before, but it had always been in shadows and half-light. Now I saw the sun on her shoulders, and the way her stomach curved inward and I knew, for the millionth time, that I was in love. Katherine dove underwater, reemerging right next to me. â€Å"And now, revenge!† She leaned down and splashed cool water on me with all her might. â€Å"If you weren't so beautiful, I might fight back,† I said, pulling her toward me. I kissed her. â€Å"The neighbors will talk,† murmured Katherine against my lips. â€Å"Let them talk,† I whispered. â€Å"I want everyone to know how much I love you.† Katherine kissed me harder, with more passion than I'd ever felt. I sucked my breath in, feeling so much desire that I stepped away. I loved Katherine so much that it almost hurt; it made it harder to breathe, harder to talk, harder to think. It was as if my desire was a force larger than myself, and I was simultaneously frightened and overjoyed to follow wherever it led me. I took a shaky breath and looked up at the sky. Large thunderclouds had rolled in, obscuring the sky, which had been a pure cerulean just moments before. â€Å"We should go,† I said, heading toward shore. Sure enough, as soon as we stepped onto dry land, a clap of thunder rolled off in the distance. â€Å"The storm came in fast,† Katherine observed as she wrung out her curls. She didn't seem at all self-conscious even though her soaking-wet white slip left nothing to the imagination. Somehow, it seemed almost more illicit and erotic to see her scantily dressed than to see her naked. â€Å"One could think that it was almost a sign that our relationship is not meant to be.† Her voice was teasing, but I felt a shiver of dread go up my spine. â€Å"No,† I said loudly, to reassure myself. â€Å"I'm just teasing you!† Katherine kissed my cheek before leaning down to pick up her dress. As she stole behind the weeping willow tree, I yanked up my breeches and put on my shirt. Katherine emerged from behind the tree a moment later, her cotton dress clinging to her curves, the damp tendrils of her hair sticking to her curves, the damp tendrils of her hair sticking to her back. Her skin had a bluish quality to it. I put my arms around her and rubbed her arms vigorously, trying to warm her up, though I knew that was impossible. â€Å"I have something to tell you,† Katherine said as she tilted her face up to the open sky. â€Å"What?† I asked. â€Å"I would be honored to attend the Founders Ball with you,† she said, and then, before I could kiss her again, she broke from my embrace and ran back to the carriage house.
